Gentian Joins Forces with LanzaJet and RAW Biofuels on The State of Nature Metrics Pilot Program

Written by Charles Bouqueuniaux | 15 July 2025

We are excited to share that Gentian has joined forces with LanzaJet and RAW Biofuels, to evaluate and provide feedback on the draft State of Nature metrics and the GRI 101 Biodiversity Framework.

The Nature Positive Initiative brings together 27 different nature reporting frameworks and sets out a set of draft unified metrics to measure the state of nature.  The objective is to identify the best available set of indicators and metrics that can be used within existing frameworks.  The intention is to move towards greater consistency, globally, and measured outcomes.

Chosen from hundreds of applicants, our consortium is 1 of 32 pilots spanning six industry sectors and covering all continents.  We are, notably, the only pilot that includes sustainable biomass and fuel organisations. Together, we are pioneering a new data service for sustainable agriculture and in the process, helping to test the applicability, relevance, and scalability of a draft set of universal State of Nature metrics.

Why This Matters for Business and Biodiversity

Nature-based risks, including biodiversity loss, climate disruption, and resource scarcity, are becoming direct operational and financial risks for businesses worldwide.

At Gentian, we combine deep ecological expertise with advanced AI and satellite technology to help tools that enable organisations to understand these risks, with unparalleled speed and precision.

From supply chain disruptions and deforestation, to water scarcity, soil degradation, and regulatory pressures around biodiversity disclosure, companies are recognising that they must measure and manage their impacts and dependencies on nature.

What We Aim to Achieve

Through this study, we hope to:

  1. Evaluate the practicality of the draft State of Nature metrics for real-world renewable fuel supply chains and projects.

  2. Contribute scientific and technical insights to shape evolving global nature measurement standards such as the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), and the Science Based Targets Network (SBTN).

  3. Inspire broader adoption of transparent, science-based nature reporting, empowering businesses across sectors to take credible and measurable action for nature.

Gentian’s Role in the Partnership

As a leader in precision biodiversity monitoring, Gentian brings a unique lens to this programme. Our AI-powered analysis of very high-resolution satellite imagery allows us to map biodiversity, assess ecological risk, and deliver actionable insights with industry-leading accuracy.

Through this pilot, we will focus on how these new metrics can be integrated into renewable fuel supply chains—especially in understanding the biodiversity impacts of feedstock sourcing, land use, and ecosystem regeneration.

Gentian’s COO, Karen Day, is working on this pilot, and others with organisations like the British Standards Institute; “it is really important to develop clear and consistent reporting mechanisms if we are to reach the goals set out by the Kunming–Montréal Global Biodiversity Framework, which champions integrating biodiversity into all levels of governance, planning, and economic decision-making.  Our focus is on innovating easy-to-use tools that provide the data required for informed integration across policies and sectors.  As the famous saying goes, you cannot manage what you cannot measure!”

Focused on sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), our pilot will assess the practicality and impact of the draft state of nature biodiversity metrics in real-world renewable fuel contexts. By examining feedstocks like Hybrid Tropical Grass and leveraging Gentian’s advanced technology, the project aims to link supply chains with measurable improvements in ecosystem health, soil function, and biodiversity.

Looking Ahead

This is more than a pilot. It’s a step towards establishing global best practices for nature-related risk management, biodiversity reporting, and ecosystem stewardship.

This pilot contributes to shaping and streamlining global nature measurement frameworks—including TNFD, GRI, and SBTN—and empowers nations and organisations to move forward with international biodiversity goals set by the Kunming-Montreal Framework to reverse nature loss by 2030.

We’re honoured to bring Gentian’s expertise to this important initiative.  Gentian is committed to building a future where nature, business, and society can thrive together.
