CSRD Reporting & Compliance

Gentian helps organisations meet CSRD requirements by providing high-resolution nature data for site-level impact assessment, risk screening, and biodiversity disclosure.

How our CSRD reporting works

Gentian helps organisations meet CSRD requirements by delivering high-resolution, remote nature data aligned with European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS). Using satellite imagery, AI-driven habitat classification, and ecological expertise, we map and assess biodiversity across your land, highlighting key impacts, dependencies, and risks.

Our outputs support the CSRD’s double materiality approach, offering clear evidence for ESRS E4 (biodiversity and ecosystems). Whether you're reporting on a single site or a full portfolio, Gentian provides accurate, repeatable, and compliance-ready biodiversity insights.

What is CSRD reporting & compliance?

What needs to be reported in CSRD?

The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is a mandatory EU regulation that requires thousands of companies to disclose their environmental and social impacts in a consistent, auditable format.

CSRD requirements include detailed reporting on how a company’s operations impact the environment, and how environmental changes create risks or opportunities for the business. This includes emissions, water use, biodiversity loss, land degradation, and nature dependencies. Reporting must follow the European Sustainability Reporting Standards (ESRS), with data that is structured, reliable, and ready for third-party assurance.

What is the timeline for CSRD reporting?

CSRD is being rolled out in phases:

  • 2025: Large listed companies already under the Non-financial Reporting Directive (NFRD) begin CSRD-aligned reporting

  • 2026: Large companies not previously covered (250+ employees, €40M turnover)

  • 2027: Listed SMEs.

  • 2028: Non-EU companies with significant EU operations

What is 'Double Materiality' in CSRD reporting?

Double materiality means that companies must assess both:

  • Impact Materiality: How the company affects the environment and society.

  • Financial Materiality: How environmental and social factors impact the company’s financial position.

Nature-related data is critical for assessing both sides, especially under ESRS E4 (biodiversity).

What are the key steps to achieve CSRD compliance?

To achieve CSRD compliance, organisations must follow a structured process grounded in clarity, completeness, and consistency:

  • Conduct a double materiality assessment.

  • Identify gaps in data, especially nature and site-level insights.

  • Collect and structure data across all relevant ESRS.

  • Ensure alignment with TNFD, SBTN, and other frameworks.

  • Prepare for third-party assurance.

FAQs

What is the role of the supply chain in CSRD reporting?

Companies must disclose significant environmental impacts and risks across their value chains, not just in direct operations. Gentian can also help assess supplier sites.

What are the penalties for non-compliance with CSRD?

Non-compliance may lead to financial penalties, reputational damage, and loss of access to capital or procurement opportunities. Reporting is mandatory and enforceable.

Is third-party assurance required for CSRD reports?

Yes. CSRD reports must be assured by an independent auditor, increasing the need for transparent, verifiable data like Gentian’s.
